Technological advancements
January 4th, 2006
Some may say that these last couple of years have been rather slow for technology improvements. I would disagree. For years new hardware for the desktop computer has been developed. Since computers have come to the desktop, the challenge was always to develop hardware powerful enough to keep up with the software we wanted to use. It now looks like we’ve come to that point. The next challenge is how we use that power. That’s where the recent focus in technology has been and will continue to expand towards.
Today’s CES keynote from Bill Gates shows how Microsoft is heading in that direction. Of course Microsoft has always been about the software side of technology, but their role never seemed more important in showing us what we know today’s technology can handle. At a certain point some concepts that were presented seemed to come from a futuristic sci-fi movie.
In the years to come, people won’t have personal computers anymore, they will have appliances for every room in their home that run on what we now know as an operating system and will have an interface designed specifically for what they need to do. And it won’t seem like science fiction anymore.
