Quick Review: All Marketers Are Liars

January 21st, 2006

I finally got myself to start reading books more. With reading so many online articles, especially blogs this last year or so, reading books has almost become a thing of the past for me. My interest was sparked these last few months as I’ve been finding titles related to the field I’m in written focused on new ways of thinking about traditional concepts.

One of these books is by Seth Godin. First of all, the title doesn’t really say what the book is about. It’s somewhat misleading and Godin admits to this on the back cover. It gets your attention though and is used to make his point as you start reading. The book is about storytelling as a way to market a product of service. People have always enjoyed stories since the beginning of time and in all of today’s very forward techniques to ‘Sell! Sell! Sell!’ Godin shows us how something as simple as telling an authentic story can be a powerful way to get attention. The key is authenticity though since, like all other marketing techniques, without that key part, your product or service will inevitably fail.

The book itself is written in a way that would appeal to its readers and makes itself a perfect example of what it’s talking about (I for one was sold on it). If anything this book is a good for showing us how companies try to decieve its customers and how there are always alternatives that build more trust in a in the consumer. A recommended read for anyone that wants to get a better understanding of what Marketing should be about.

3 out of 4 stars rating.
